History of the Foundation of


Atelier for Artistic Ceramic Artcraft Design

MOTHER and CHILD (1993)

First spontaneous steps led Peter Zanger, who´s regular professional formations are bank clerc and diplomated biologist, to ceramic experiments guided by his mother, attending an VHS ceramic course directed by professor Schaus at the Weilmünster basic school in 1979, and by Myriam Reina during the first voyage of the colombian artcraft designer to Europe in 1993 (see above). The proper foundation of his own ceramic atelier dates later in the years 1996/97, when he lived with his spouse and daughter in Envigado / Medellin.

Due to professional occupation compromises of his spouse, the independent natural scientist setteled in March 1996 together with his daughter and wife for 1 1/2 years to the colombian town of Envigado besides Medellin and started here an career as ceramic artist, learning in courses guided by Master  Rodrigo Monsalve Isaza in Envigado and Master Mariela Arango at Museo de Antioquia in Medellin and inspired by the artwork of the colombian sculpturer Blanca Monroy de Bonilla.

It was master Rodrigo Monsalve Isaza who gave the first impetus for the foundation of an own Ceramic Artcraft Workshop by his student in the Antioquian Village in January of 1997, by offering his ceramic stove as basic equipment for the establishment of "Piedras del Río". The new opening of the art-coffee-shop gallery "IMAGINARTE" near the Santa Gertrudis church at the small towns market place at  Carrera 42 con Calle 38 sur provided a locality for design, construction and exposition of precolombian-indigenous inspired and self designed ceramic artcraft. Also enough space for ceramic lessons was given inside the shop gallery.

The design of most ceramic objects elaborated there during January until August of 1997 has been inspired by colombian indigenous artcraft exposed at the Museo Etnologico of Universidad de Antioquia (UdeA), Museo de Antioquia (Medellin) or documented as literature illustrations, even if the ceramic creations of Piedras del Rio seldom have been exact repliques of existing artcraft but much more combinations of different styles and epoques, as for example the use of zoomorphic figures taken from regional tales, myths and legends or used as masks during traditional festivities in Medellin, Riosucio and Barranquilla in combination with historical artwork patterns.

Sculptures and ceramics of Piedras del Rio have been exposed and offered for sale at the Imaginarte shop gallery and basic courses about the thematics working with clay, application of ceramic glazes and kiln use have been offered to the employees of Imaginarte and to the public. The Imaginarte Coffeeshop also ordered several decoration objects for it´s tables, mostly ashtrays and candle holders. Some ceramic pieces have been given in exchange for artworks of local artists. The artists atelier was given up and working material was returned to it´s owner, when at 28th August 1997 Peter Zanger, Dr. Sol Montoya and their daughter left Envigado to return to their home at Frankfurt. Half of the constructed ceramics remained as present with their friends in Medellin and Envigado.

During the following month and years until August of 1999 the artcraft workshop went on to exist as individual studio without professional working installations in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. More or less espontaneously created sculptures had to be transported to rented kilns in the vecine town of Offenbach. The design of the ceramic artcraft objects abandoned during this time it`s initial precolombian replica concept and began to inspire itself more in contemporaneous or Asian and African etnological artcraft as well as in human busts.

An invitation from Myriam Reina from 20th August 1999 initiated the return of the artist from Frankfurt to Colombia, a step that in it´s beginnings was designed as excursion to Santa Marta with an "Mobile Workshop" composed of a turntable and several tools to design clay figures. After several weeks of activities and improvised burning of artworks in homemade fire-stoves in the riverside town quarter of Mamatoco, the couple of ceramists followed an long year plan of Myriam Reina to establish herself in the capital of Colombia, where they rent - together with the 3 daughters of Myriam - an apartment in South Bogota at 1st October 1999. There the temporary mobile ceramic workshop was established together with the environmental planning office PLAN – Oficina de Planeación Ecológica E.U. in an residential building in Southern Bogotá, First of May Quarter / San Cristobal and worked there until 28th December of 2001.

Instantly the atelier began to work with the free-styled design of ceramic sculptures. After the acquisition of the basic working materials and a ceramic kiln the artists of Piedras del Río began a serial production of handmade household ceramics – as individual designed name-cups and other dishes – games on glazed tiles – as chess, nine men´s morris, ludo, spring, draughts and so on – nameplates and decorative objects. In 2001 various courses as introduction in the small-industrial production of ceramic household goods have been offered mainly to scholars of Bogotan bachelor schools.

The constant main art-working staff consisted in Myriam Reina and Peter Zanger, spontaneously supported by other family members. During the first month the products of the workshop have been sold by personal contacts to friends and supporters of the productive project, lateron Piedras del Río established contacts with art trade shops in Chapinero (Buzos), Usaquen (Para Siempre), Envigado (Imaginarte) and Santa Marta (Korales) and maintained stands on folcloristic art markets in Usaquen / North-Bogotá.

At 28th of December of 2001 the ceramic workshop and the office had been urged to give up their installations and to move to Vereda Fonqueta in Chia until 21st of June of 2002, but without further workshop facilities, so that the artwork remained discontinued, due to the confiscation of the atelier equipment by the house owner in South Bogotá.

At 21st of June the ceramic atelier moved with it´s two artists to the german village of Weilmünster, where the establishment of an greater atelier and course room inside an former production plant for optical precision instruments of the atelier founders family was offered an intended. These initial plans had to be changed several times during the following 10 years due to local incompatibilities. So the atelier remained improvised inside an second kitchen room of the artists home, but still in conditions to design amounts of new objects. 

Now married since 4th February 2000, Myriam and Peter Zanger designing precolombian inspired ceramic artcraft in an improvised atelier in the basement kitchen room of the Zanger family house at Weilmünster.

In July 2002 the atelier participated in the national festivities hold by the Frankfurt colombian consulate at Hoechst, where several older objects were sold. First later new designed objects were theater puppets, bowls with fossil imprints and relieves, candle-carrying owls, books as bookshelf separators, robust cups, ethnic house-altar, house shields. In spring 2003 the atelier received first orders to construct greater garden sculptures for the local Kunst&Krempel store, but the drying sculptures remained besides a greater number of  worthful pieces from Envigado victim of destructive vandalism during an house breaking at 20th July 2003. 

Between 2004 and 2006 Piedras del Río, that now also titeled itself with the english translation of it´s name RIVERSTONES, participated in the yearly Spring, Peasant- and Martini-Markets of it´s village as well as several "20 de Julio" festivities of the Frankfurt colombian community at Sossenheim. In spring 2006 the new ceramic object design was again interrupted due to an watertube damage inside the atelier after a second housebreak at 6th march 2006 until in spring 2007 the atelier received an invitation of the General Consulate of the Republic of Venezuela to participate in an joint exposition for the festivities of the conmemoration of the indigenous revolution in this country in October 2007. This invitation generated a new constructive and creative dynamic as well as the inversion in a proper ceramic fire kiln which was bought in August 2007.

The common exposition of replicas of precolombian ceramics and paintings of Peter Zanger, Myriam Reina and the father of her three daughters, the colombian painter Fernando Cardenas Barrera in the Consulate of Venezuela, set an preliminary end to the until then common creation activities of the artists couple Peter and Myriam, due to the fact that the reunification with her childrens father gave new impetus to her whole families settlement plans in Europe.

Exposition 2007

The single and individual advance of his atelier set new conceptual design necessities for the ateliers founder since autumn 2007, who parallely constructed the Independent Investigation Institute CID, the CID Publishing House and the Image Agency Foto CID as time shared self-employed independent job. The outlining of the conceptual development of the atelier is given in the referent CID Company Report Chapters from 2009, 2011 and 2013 (a. Expositions) / 2013  (b. Atelier). The conceptual structuring had to deliver an combined enterprise concept as mosaique of science, investigation, documentation and artcraft design as creative element for visual communication. The company element "Atelier" should have been developed with the time towards an independent entity or remain integrated in a new structured CID enterprise concept as part of an communication media institute that could substitute the former concept of comercial company, the latter to consider as an strategic error by itself.

Parallely to the construction of the CID Internet Network the establishment and development of the CID Arte company branch as visual comunication platform, artists gallery, presentation area for ceramic art objects and announcement site for planned activities (expositions, participations, conferences, projects, etc.) moved the whole companies concept away from the initial "natural science investigation and publishing bureau with creative self-study area" towards an Communication Media about Art and Science with difficult to describe political character.

In 2008 the necessity to establish new relationships to the districtal and regional environment set the focus to find exposition sites (art-stores, galleries, etc.) for RIVERSTONES artcraft. These where found in Weilburg (YuHaiCulture, 3rd World Shop, etc.), Weilmünster (KAYA, etc.) and Frankfurt (Galeria Simon, Galeria Eldorado). Parallely a project for an Ceramic Exposition Park in the entrance area of the RIVERSTONES atelier was created and found support by an chinese export company from Weilburg, that also studied at that time the marketing possibilities for ceramic products from the atelier. A second exposition in Braunfels was planned for August 2008, but remained cancelled and only exposed as internet catalogue.

The successful development of new shapes and ceramic design forms during 2008 until 2013 that found acceptance inside the small circle of friends of the atelier and the "construction on demand" of individually designed ceramic objects opened a promising perspective for the future development of the atelier that reached a certain peak during the participation in 2 exposition campaigns in 2012 in Laubuseschbach and Weilburg, what also strengthened the CID Arte company branch as good combination platform for photographic documentation, visual communication and comunicative design activities.

Nevertheless, the parallel occupation with natural science thematics, mostly the advancing of several critical focus studies about the criminal abuse of german medical health system techniques (See: http://www.report-2013-cid.blogspot.comreopened an political conflict area that might already have been reason for the intromissions from 20.7.2003 and 6.3.006 against the atelier, but surely was the repeated reason of "administrative vengeance strikes" against the ceramic open air exposition area and botanical garden in front of the CID house as unprotected and most vulnerable area of the whole enterprise. 

The first heavy "vengeance strikes" where led during September 2009 with a partial destruction of the ceramic garden and stealing of exposed objects. This led RIVERSTONES to the more firm reconstruction of the exposition site as lake with cement basin, where the exposed artcraft was attached as unremoveable glazed céramic mosaique, an effort that was again destroyed by an circle of persons acting like an undercover terror group employing heavy machinery and intra-institutional support from armed state repression organs during 28th June until 9th July 2010. In direct calendary relationship with these terror-like activities "deceased" the spiritual mentor of Piedras del Río, the sculpturer Blanca Monroy in Bogotá. A year later and logistic supported by former state justice members the exposition area in reconstruction was newly destroyed between 20. and 22. June by overfilling it with a cement layer. The "works" were done by an local company that stands in familiar relationship to persons related with the bank-credit-financing of the Piedras del Río foundation in Bogotá between 1999 and 2002 (See: http://www.waldgraeber.blogspot.de/).

For the oldest inhabitant of the RIVERSTONES atelier house, the mother of the atelier´s founder, the fact that she had to cross in her houses entrance over a cement layer, that buried a long-year artwork and garden raised and supported by her spiritually and financially, led to a successive degradation of her walking abilities, followed by heavy walking pain, so that she finally 16 month later fall ill. In an long prepared action by a circle of paramilitary organized health service workers and state employees she was then abducted and raped in a nocturne raid at 6.11.2012 (27 years anniversary of Bogota Justice Palace Raid) inside her house and brought to a Frankfurt Hospital where she was found a week later with head wounds. Further operational brain wounds she received next day, the 15th November 2012, the 10 year anniversary of her husbands death. The atelier founders mother was declared dead the 10th December 2012, the 20th anniversary of the assassination day of her daughter in law´s father in Tamesis/Antioquia.
